High Court restrains police from arresting Abhishek Banerjee

In a big relief for Trinamool Congress general secretary Abhishek Banerjee, the Calcutta High Court on Tuesday restrained the police from taking coercive measures against him in three criminal cases till November 30.

After hearing both sides, the Bench of Justice Saugato Bhattacharya directed Banerjee to cooperate with the police, holding, however, that interrogation was presently not necessary. The Court also directed the police to serve a notice to the TMC MP from Diamond Harbour at least 48 hours before the hearing and submit a report before it regarding the progress of the investigation process. Tuesday’s order would not have any bearing on a previous Supreme Court order allowing Banerjee to travel out of India for treatment. Banerjee is also the nephew of former Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

“The order passed today shall not in any way curtail the right of the petitioner to go abroad for treatment in terms of the order passed by the Hon’ble Supreme Court on August 10, 2026, for treatment, subject to compliance of conditions mentioned in the said order,” the Tuesday order read.

Banerjee has been facing several cases, including those of corruption and publicly threatening the Opposition leaders.
