Modi meets UN chief Guterres, discusses India's BRICS presidency priorities
United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres met Prime Minister Narendra Modi ahead of the BRICS Summit and discussed global conflicts, UN reforms and the growing risks posed by autonomous weapons, the United Nations said.
Guterres expressed appreciation for India's close cooperation with the UN. The two leaders discussed priorities for India's BRICS presidency, including the need to reform multilateral institutions to better reflect the realities of the 21st century.
They also held wide-ranging discussions on the conflicts in the Middle East and Ukraine and their impact on the global economy, including access to food and fertilisers.
Guterres reaffirmed the principle of freedom of navigation during the meeting.
The two leaders also exchanged views on the growing threat posed by lethal autonomous weapons, according to the UN.
The meeting took place ahead of the BRICS Summit, with discussions covering India's role in strengthening multilateral cooperation amid ongoing geopolitical conflicts and economic pressures.
