Gujarat destroys seized drugs worth estimated Rs 2,212 crore in Bharuch

Narcotics with an estimated value of Rs 2,212 crore, including around 11.10 lakh bottles of various substances and 14,500 kg of drugs, seized from various parts of Gujarat over the past year, were on Monday destroyed at an incinerator in Bharuch district, officials said.

These substances were seized by local police, CID and ATS, and 877 cases were registered. The drugs were scientifically disposed of at the BEIL incinerator in the Dahej industrial area as per environmental norms in the presence of Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi, according to an official release.  Sanghavi said Gujarat Police have been waging a “war” against drug cartels and peddlers by busting syndicates and coordinating with social organisations to divert youngsters away from drugs. “In every corner of Gujarat, police are acting against drug cartels and peddlers, not as a campaign, but as a war,” he told media persons.

Sanghavi said drugs valued at more than Rs 2,000 crore were destroyed at the same incineration facility last October, while the latest exercise involved narcotics valued at Rs 2,212 crore. He claimed the Gujarat Police achieved the highest conviction rate in drug-related cases in India this year.

“We have been successful in securing convictions against more than 65 per cent of those involved in spreading the drug menace. We are moving towards achieving a 100 per cent conviction rate,” he added.
