Ganga crosses highest flood level in Patna as river swells amid heavy rain
The Ganga water level at Gandhi Ghat in Patna rose by 10 cm in four hours on Saturday morning, crossing the river's highest flood level by 1 cm and raising the risk of inundation in low-lying areas of the Bihar capital, according to an official bulletin.
The Water Resources Department (WRD) said the Ganga was flowing at 50.53 metres at 10 am, which was 1 cm above the highest flood level.
The water level is expected to rise further to 50.62 metres by 8 am on Sunday, the department said, advising people to exercise caution.
Several districts in Bihar are facing flood-like conditions as the Ganga, Gandak, Kosi, Burhi Gandak, Bagmati, Punpun and Ghaghra rivers continue to flow above their respective danger marks following heavy rainfall in Bihar and neighbouring Nepal.
The rising Ganga has increased concerns over flooding and erosion in vulnerable areas, particularly along low-lying stretches and embankments.
Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary conducted an aerial survey of flood-affected areas on Friday and reviewed relief and rescue operations.
He directed officials to identify affected families and ensure timely relief. He also ordered continuous monitoring of vulnerable areas and Ganga embankments from Buxar to Bhagalpur to prevent erosion and breaches.
Authorities have urged residents in vulnerable areas to remain alert and follow advisories as water levels are expected to rise further.
