Former soldier killed after Chinese kite string slits throat in Jammu

A retired army soldier died after his throat was slit by a banned Chinese kite string while he was riding through Jammu's Ring Road officials said on Monday, Aug 31.

Naib Subedar (Retd) Lakhvinder Singh suffered critical injuries after coming into contact with the string commonly known as "manja" while passing through the Bishnah area on a two-wheeler late on Sunday. He was rushed to hospital but succumbed to his injuries.

Singh was returning to his home in R S Pura after finishing work as a private security guard at an industrial unit in Bari Brahmana officials said.

The sale and use of Chinese kite string is banned by the authorities and several shopkeepers have been arrested across Jammu in recent months for clandestinely dealing in the material.

The latest death has renewed concerns over enforcement of the ban with residents demanding strict action against those selling and using the prohibited string.

Police have registered a case under relevant sections of law and an investigation is under way to identify those responsible officials said.
