Football's soul is not for sale!

Sport has always been one of the purest ways human beings test themselves, and football has long been the most tribal of all its languages. But when power, money and vanity begin to crowd out meaning, the game starts to feel less like a shared ritual and more like a cartel.

Those opening lines matter because they capture why football still cuts so deep. It is not just entertainment. It is identity, memory, class, geography and emotion all bundled into ninety minutes. It creates unlikely alliances, dissolves ideological borders, and turns strangers into a temporary family. I may disagree with both Zohran Mamdani and Piers Morgan and I'm sure both of them dislike each other as well. But we all love Arsenal Football Club and celebrated wildly when the North London club won its first title in twenty-two years a few months ago.

That is exactly why the recent actions of FIFA president Gianni Infantino have landed so hard with so many people. When the guardians of the game begin to behave as though football is merely a financial asset to be sliced, packaged and monetised, they do not just make a bad decision. They threaten the soul of the sport itself.

Infantino's reported push to create a new FIFA commercial subsidiary and potentially sell stakes to private investors has been widely read as a money-first move that could hand outsized influence over the World Cup to outside interests. The backlash has been fierce because the World Cup is not just another property. It is football's crown jewel, its most universal stage, the singular event that still manages to make the planet feel briefly connected. To suggest that it can be leveraged like a private equity product is to invite outrage not only from purists, but from anyone who believes sport should retain some moral distinction from ordinary commerce.

The deeper problem is not simply the proposal itself, but the pattern around it. Infantino has increasingly become a symbol of a football hierarchy that seems more comfortable talking about growth, revenue and control than about trust, integrity and stewardship. That is why this moment feels bigger than one controversial plan. It reflects a broader fear that football's governing class has drifted too far from the people who give the game its meaning. Supporters may accept commercial reality, but they do not want to feel like tenants in a sport they emotionally own.

There is also something especially corrosive about the language of "development" being used to justify such moves. FIFA often speaks in the name of smaller nations, grassroots expansion and global opportunity. Yes, the world saw Cabo Verde on the global stage a couple of months ago and boy, did they make the world notice them, just look at the superstar that their goalkeeper Vozinha has become.

Yet when power is centralised and financial engineering becomes the dominant instinct, the result looks less like uplift and more like extraction. It is hard to square the rhetoric of inclusion with structures that appear to concentrate power at the top while asking everyone else to applaud the efficiency.

That is why the phrase "selling the soul of football" does not sound melodramatic here. It sounds precise. Football survives because people believe it belongs to everyone: the child juggling a ball in a narrow lane, the worker watching a match after a long shift, the fan waking before dawn to follow a club thousands of miles away. Once that emotional compact is treated as secondary to dealmaking, the game loses something that no broadcast contract can restore.

And football is not dealing with this in isolation. Sport more broadly is under strain from corruption, opaque governance and the blurring of lines between competition and commerce. The modern sporting landscape is full of conflicts that erode trust: administrators who act like power brokers, institutions that seem too close to politics, and commercial structures that sometimes appear to matter more than the sport itself. Corruption does not always arrive as an outright scandal. Sometimes it arrives as a culture, a habit of doing things in ways that may be legal but are still deeply damaging to faith in the game.

The rise of sports betting adds another layer of concern. In America, gambling has moved from the margins into the mainstream, and with that shift has come a new kind of sport consumption, one where every pass, foul and substitution is immediately reducible to odds, spreads and profit. Betting is no longer a side market. It is becoming part of the spectacle itself. That may be profitable, but it also changes the relationship between fan and game. The supporter stops being just a supporter and starts becoming a participant in a machine built around extraction.

This is where Kylian Mbappé's recent remarks land with real force. He has been outspoken in refusing to lend his image to sports betting and junk food promotions, arguing in effect that athletes should not casually help normalise products that can harm vulnerable people. That is not a minor marketing quibble. It is a moral position. In an era where elite sport is increasingly saturated with gambling tie-ins, food sponsorships and commercial clutter, Mbappé's stance feels unusually clear-eyed. It reminds us that the face of a game need not become the billboard for everything around it.

His criticism also matters because footballers today are more than players. They are cultural symbols, especially for younger audiences who absorb their choices as much as their performances. When a figure like Mbappé rejects certain endorsements, he is making a statement that the athlete's responsibility does not end at the boundary or touchline. He is suggesting that sport should not surrender all its authority to whatever pays the most.

And yet, despite all this, there is a reason to end on hope rather than despair. The backlash to Infantino has not been isolated or timid. It has brought together journalists, fan communities, football associations and institutional voices that might otherwise disagree on nearly everything else. In that sense, the scandal has done one useful thing: it has reminded people what they are defending. Not a logo, not a revenue stream, not a chairman's ambition, but the idea that sport should remain credible, shared and fair.

That shared resistance matters. It shows that the public still notices when the line is crossed. It shows that football has not been completely absorbed by the logic of money. And it suggests that a global sports cleanup is not only desirable, but possible. Better governance, stricter transparency, clearer sponsorship boundaries and a renewed respect for athletes and supporters would not solve every problem. But they would begin to restore the basic trust without which sport becomes just another business.

In the end, maybe that is the real silver lining. This controversy has united people who usually stand apart. It has forced sports bodies and fans to confront the same uncomfortable truth: if sport is allowed to become entirely commercial, it ceases to be sacred in the first place. The fight now is not against progress or modernity. It is for the preservation of the one thing that makes sport worth loving — its ability to belong to everyone.
