Fire breaks out at GGSIPU auditorium, no injuries reported

A fire broke out in the main auditorium of Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University in Dwarka on Sunday morning, raising sharp questions about campus safety standards. No injuries were reported, but the incident led to calls for a judicial enquiry after allegations surfaced about missing fire clearances. The blaze was reported at 10.42 am from the Sector 16 campus.
The fire was first seen by staff members near the auditorium. They alerted security, who then informed the fire department. Thick smoke rose from the structure. Students in nearby areas were moved back as a precaution.
The auditorium, which regularly hosts cultural events, seminars and large gatherings, was empty at the time. “Two water tenders, three water bowsers, one skylift and one quick response vehicle were sent at once. The flames were controlled by 11.20 am. Cooling work continued for some time,” a Delhi Fire Services officer said. He added that the exact cause will be known only after a detailed investigation. Aman Kumar, a member of the Delhi University executive council, called for a judicial enquiry and verification of the building’s NOC from the Delhi Fire Service Department, citing the hall’s frequent use. He noted the incident occurred on a Sunday, averting potential tragedy on a working day. In response, Indraprastha University denied the allegations. The PRO, Nalin Ranjan, affirmed all required clearances and proper documentation, including the fire department NOC, and stated that a preliminary inspection indicated a short circuit as the probable cause. He added the university would fully cooperate with authorities.
Firefighters examined the building after bringing the flames under control. They checked the electrical systems, stage wiring, and air conditioning units. They said a short circuit remains the most likely cause, but the final report will confirm it. The extent of damage is yet to be assessed.
Students in nearby hostels reported evacuating after noticing smoke but said they did not hear any alarms. They believe the incident highlights the need for a campus-wide review of fire safety systems. The auditorium, a frequently used venue by various student groups, was affected. The fire has raised concerns about whether safety protocols and equipment such as exits, extinguishers, and alarms are being routinely checked and maintained.
Police and fire teams cordoned off the area. Investigators are looking at CCTV footage and checking maintenance logs. Officers said they do not suspect foul play at this stage. The incident has revived concerns about fire preparedness in large public institutions. Several city auditoriums handle heavy footfall but depend on short-term measures or outdated equipment.
By afternoon, the smoke had cleared, and the building was handed back to the university authorities. A detailed inspection will follow. The fire department will submit its report once the investigation is complete. The university said it welcomes any official review and will share documents if asked.
The cause of the fire will be confirmed after the final examination. The debate over safety compliance is likely to continue.
