Delhi Metro’s outstanding JICA loan stands at Rs 35,828 crore, says Union Government
The outstanding principal loan payable by the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation to the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) stood at Rs 35,828 crore in June, with the DMRC having repaid nearly Rs 9,948.09 crore from its operational revenue, the Rajya Sabha was informed on Monday.
In a written reply to a question, Union Minister of State for Housing and Urban Affairs Tokhan Sahu said that in the last five years, the cumulative amounts (equity, grants and subordinate debt) released by the Centre and the Delhi government are Rs 6,604.37 crore and Rs 6,155.44 crore, respectively.
"The outstanding principal for implementation of various phases of DMRC payable to JICA till June 2026 is Rs 35,828 crore at prevailing exchange rate. The sanction orders of DMRC metro projects contain suitable provisions for loan repayment structure," the minister said.
Sahu said fare fixation is done in accordance with provisions of the Metro Railways (Operation and Maintenance) Act 2002.
The aspect of affordability by commuters is taken into consideration while fixing the fares. The DMRC has further informed that various measures have been taken by it to increase non-fare box revenue to ensure an affordable fare structure, he said.
