Delhi LG directs MCD to adopt Indore model for waste management
Delhi Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu on Monday directed the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) to explore adopting the Indore Municipal Corporation’s waste management model on a pilot basis in one civic zone, while reviewing the Capital’s preparedness on sanitation, waterlogging, vector-borne diseases and air pollution.
Chairing a high-level review meeting with the MCD Commissioner, additional commissioners and zonal deputy commissioners, the LG reviewed the status of solid waste management, garbage disposal, desilting of drains, waterlogging prevention and measures to curb dengue and malaria during the monsoon season.
On the issue of legacy waste, the LG appreciated the progress made in clearing Delhi’s dumpsites but stressed that fresh waste reaching these sites must be scientifically processed simultaneously to prevent further accumulation. He directed officials to establish robust monitoring mechanisms to ensure that daily waste processing keeps pace with the daily inflow.
Expressing concern over the city’s waste management practices, the LG noted that nearly half of Delhi’s waste is still not segregated at source and around 50 per cent of the waste generated each day continues to be dumped at landfill sites. Referring to the success of Indore’s waste management system, he asked officials to examine the feasibility of implementing the Indore Municipal Corporation model as a pilot project in one MCD zone.
The meeting also reviewed traffic congestion caused by toll plazas, the implementation of the PM-UDAY scheme and measures to tackle vector-borne diseases. Looking ahead to winter, the LG directed officials to prepare a comprehensive action plan to curb air pollution, with a focus on resurfacing roads across the Capital. He also ordered a dedicated road safety audit of MCD-maintained roads to identify and address potential hazards.
Concluding the meeting, the LG said every MCD officer must remain vigilant, proactive and accountable in delivering civic services, adding that a cleaner, safer and more resilient Delhi can only be achieved through timely execution and a strong sense of responsibility.
