Deekshabhoomi development must be as per UNESCO's World Heritage standards: Cong MLA

Maharashtra Congress MLA Nitin Raut on Monday said the development and modernisation of Nagpur's Deekshabhoomi must strictly adhere to UNESCO World Heritage standards, while ensuring that the historic character of its main stupa is preserved.

Raut made the remarks after a meeting on the proposed development of Deekshabhoomi was held at the District Planning Bhavan under the chairmanship of Nagpur district Guardian Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule.

Deekshabhoomi project architect Sandeep Kamble also met Raut and made a detailed presentation on the proposed development plan, according to a release issued by the MLA.

Raut advised Kamble that the original architecture and design of the main stupa should not be altered in any manner during the modernisation and beautification work.

"The development of Deekshabhoomi must be undertaken strictly in accordance with UNESCO's World Heritage standards. I have had an inseparable association with Deekshabhoomi for the past 45 years. Through 'Sankalp' organisation, I have had the opportunity to serve here for 39 years," Raut said.

He said Deekshabhoomi was not merely a structure but a centre of intellectual and spiritual energy for millions of followers of Babasaheb Ambedkar across the world.

"I welcome the initiative taken by the government for its development. However, preserving the historical sanctity and identity of the original Dhamma Chakra Stupa, regarded as the only hollow stupa of its kind in Asia, must remain our highest priority," the former Maharashtra minister said.
