CWG 2026: Harjinder, Gulveer win Silver as India’s medal count reaches 12
Weightlifter Harjinder Kaur and long-distance runner Gulveer Singh won silver medals for India at the Commonwealth Games on Tuesday, while three Indian boxers advanced to the semifinals to assure the country of at least three more medals.
Harjinder rewrote Commonwealth Games records in both the snatch and clean and jerk on her way to silver in the women's 69kg category, while Gulveer became the first Indian to win a Commonwealth Games medal in the men's 10,000m. India's medal tally rose to 12, including two gold, seven silver and three bronze medals, leaving the country ninth in the standings.
Australia led the medal table with 33 gold, 17 silver and 27 bronze medals for a total of 77.
Harjinder, who won bronze in the 71kg category at the Birmingham Games four years ago, produced a career-best performance to finish second behind Canada's Charlotte Simoneau.
The 29-year-old first lifted 99kg in the snatch to break the Games record before improving it to 101kg with her final attempt. She then lifted 123kg in the clean and jerk before raising the bar to 126kg, finishing with a combined total of 227kg.
Simoneau dominated the event, setting Games records in all three categories with a 108kg snatch, 132kg clean and jerk and a total of 240kg to win gold by a 13kg margin.
Gulveer followed Harjinder's achievement with a historic silver in the men's 10,000m, clocking 27:49.78 to finish just 0.85 seconds behind Australia's Ky Robinson, who won gold in 27:48.93.
Competing in relentless rain on a waterlogged track, Gulveer stayed with the leading group before producing a late surge to secure the silver.
National record holder Vishal TK also advanced to the men's 400m semifinals, keeping India's hopes of another athletics medal alive. The 22-year-old finished second in his heat in 46.49 seconds and progressed as the 14th-fastest qualifier among the 16 semifinalists. The semifinals will be held on July 30.
In boxing, Priya Ghanghas, Preeti Pawar and Jadumani Singh all won their quarterfinal bouts to advance to the semifinals and guarantee India at least three bronze medals.
Asian Games bronze medallist Preeti defeated Northern Ireland's Nicole Clyde 5-0 in the women's 54kg quarterfinal, while reigning Asian champion Priya overcame home favourite Niamh Mitchell 4-1 in the 60kg category after losing the opening round.
Jadumani advanced in the men's 55kg category with a unanimous-decision victory over Zambia's Mwengo Mwale.
Parveen Hooda, however, was eliminated after losing 2-3 to England's Sacha Hickey in the women's quarterfinals. Kapil Pokhariya also bowed out in the men's 90kg event.
