Six Congress workers jailed after protest at CEC's Agra home

Agra: Police have booked around 20 Congress workers after slogans were allegedly painted outside Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar's residence during a protest. Six of the accused were arrested and sent to jail on Tuesday.
The protest took place in the Vijay Nagar area on Monday as part of a Congress agitation against Kumar, according to both reports. The workers allegedly used black paint to write slogans on the gate and wall before leaving.
Police registered the case at Hariparvat police station following a written complaint by Sub-Inspector Gaurav Gupta. The complaint named eight people and referred to 15 to 20 unidentified Congress workers, the reports said.
The six arrested workers were identified as Anil Yadav, Mukesh Dhangar, Manoj Gaur, Rajesh Kumar, Raja Gautam and Pankaj Chaudhary. Police said they were sent to jail on Tuesday.
The accused face provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita covering attempt to murder, grievous hurt, wrongful restraint and assault against a public servant. The case also invokes provisions concerning rioting, house trespass, criminal intimidation and intentional insult.
Congress city president Amit Singh disputed the police action and said several charges were false, the two outlets reported. He said a party delegation would ask the police commissioner on Wednesday to remove those provisions.
Media reports, said the six arrested workers were remanded to judicial custody until October 3. It also reported that police were examining CCTV footage to identify other participants.
The property has been described as Kumar's ancestral residence.
