Coal India’s e-auction premium rises to 59 per cent in August

Coal India Ltd (CIL) sold coal at an average premium of 59 per cent over the notified price under its e-auction in August 2026, higher than the 46 per cent average premium recorded during the first five months of the current fiscal year, provisional miner data showed.

The company offered 210.66 lakh tonnes of coal under Single Window Mode Agnostic (SWMA) for e-auction during the month; Coal India regulatory filing data showed that 82.76 lakh tonnes, or 39 per cent, were allocated. For the cumulative period between April and August 2026, CIL offered 1,291.66 lakh tonnes of coal under the e-auction route, against which 477.40 lakh tonnes, or 37 per cent, were allocated, at an average premium of 46 per cent over the notified price.

Among the subsidiaries, Northern Coalfields Ltd (NCL) recorded full allocation of the quantity offered, both in August and on a cumulative basis, at a premium of 173 per cent and 120 per cent (April-August), respectively, the highest among all subsidiaries. South Eastern Coalfields Ltd (SECL) recorded the allocation at 50 per cent in August, with a premium of 81 per cent, while Mahanadi Coalfields Ltd (MCL), the largest offerer at 89.28 lakh tonnes during the month, saw only 30 per cent allocation at a 33 per cent premium.

Central Coalfields Ltd (CCL) recorded the lowest premium among subsidiaries in August at 31 per cent, with 45 per cent of its offered quantity allocated.
