Coal India profit rises to Rs 8,852 crore in Q1
State-owned CIL on Monday reported a 0.6 per cent increase in consolidated net profit to Rs 8,852.11 crore in the June quarter, aided by higher revenues.
The company had posted a consolidated net profit of Rs 8,797.05 crore in the year-ago period, Coal India Ltd (CIL) said in a filing to the BSE. The consolidated revenue from operations during the first quarter rose 8 per cent to Rs 46,254.80 crore over Rs 42,919.20 crore in the corresponding quarter of the previous fiscal year.
Total expenses of the coal behemoth rose to Rs 36,816.23 crore over Rs 32,903.19 crore in the year-ago period. The company's board had declared interim dividend of Rs 5.50 per equity share for 2026-27.
In a presentation, the company said it produced 169.63 million tonnes of coal during the quarter as against 183.32 million tonnes (MT) in the year-ago period.
The coal offtake rose to 197.86 MT from 190.96 MT a year earlier.
The closing coal stock of CIL as on June 30, 2026 was 101.35 MT, CIL said, adding that the "increase of inventory with respect to 30th June 2025 was 2.41 MT."
Coal India accounts for over 80 per cent of domestic coal production.
CIL's output dropped 1.7 per cent to 768.1 MT in FY26. The company produced 781.1 MT in FY25.
In a separate filing, CIL said it has approved an investment of Rs 22.20 lakh in the Rs 30 lakh rights issue of its renewables arm, CIL Rajasthan Akshay Urja Ltd (CRAUL).
CIL holds a 74 per cent stake in the joint venture, while Rajasthan Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Ltd (RVUNL) owns the remaining 26 per cent.
"CIL board at its meeting held on date has inter-alia, accorded approval for investment in rights issue of CIL Rajasthan Akshay Urja Ltd (CRAUL) by Coal India Ltd," the filing said.
Coal India Ltd is the main fuel supplier to the country's power sector, providing the bulk of coal required by thermal power plants.
Its role is central to energy security, especially as coal still accounts for roughly 70 per cent of India's power generation.
CIL operates through eight main fully owned producing subsidiaries, a planning/consultancy wing, and a foreign subsidiary in Mozambique.
Major subsidiaries include BCCL, CCL, ECL, MCL, NCL, SECL, WCL, and CMPDIL. These subsidiaries collectively manage the majority of India's coal production.
