China mudslide death toll rises to 3 after heavy rain from Typhoon Saudel

The death toll from a mudslide in eastern China rose to three on Sunday following days of heavy rain brought by Typhoon Saudel. Nine people remained missing.

The mudslide struck part of a village in Suichuan County of Jiangxi province early Saturday, damaging around a dozen houses. Rescuers recovered the bodies of two more people on Sunday, state broadcaster CCTV reported. 

More than 5,300 people across the country have been moved to safer locations amid the severe weather.

In a separate incident, two people were killed in Hunan province in south-central China following heavy rains caused by the typhoon, CCTV reported. The report did not provide details on how they died but said the rainfall triggered landslides and other disasters.

Typhoon Saudel made two landfalls in Zhejiang province on August 28 before making a third landfall as a tropical storm in Fujian province on September 3, China's official news agency Xinhua reported. 

Zhejiang and Fujian are both neighbouring provinces of Jiangxi.  (with inputs from Associated Press)
