Chandigarh advocate arrested after allegedly shooting landlord's wife during forced eviction

A 67-year-old advocate was arrested after allegedly opening fire at his landlord's wife during an eviction drive at a flat in Sector 42 here, leaving her with splinter injuries to her face.

The incident occurred on Saturday, 1 August, when Manvinder Kaur, wife of Rajinder Singh, arrived at the flat with a court bailiff and police personnel to execute an eviction order against tenant J P S Chadha, officials reported.

Chadha had been living in the flat for 36 years, allegedly fired at the group from the balcony after police broke open the door when he refused to respond to repeated knocks.

Splinters from the shot hit Kaur in the face. She was rushed to the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), where she is undergoing treatment.

Police said Chadha was overpowered and arrested when he attempted to reload his licensed firearm.

The incident followed a long-running dispute between Chadha and his landlord over possession of the flat.

Chadha's son, however, claimed the family had a stay order in its favour and alleged that people had attempted to forcibly enter the house. He said the next court hearing was scheduled for August 3.

Police maintained that the eviction proceedings were carried out in accordance with a court order.
