CBI files FIR against ex-SSB Assistant Commandant over alleged smuggling nexus on India-Nepal Border

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has filed a case against a former Assistant Commandant of the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB). He is accused of helping with large-scale cross-border smuggling, having connections with known smugglers, and gaining unexplained wealth while stationed along the India-Nepal border.
Authorities say the FIR was filed after allegations that the officer, who served with the 20th Battalion in Sitamarhi from March 2023 to January 2026, was involved in illegal activities across the border. The Bhangaha Border Outpost is named as the main site of these alleged actions.
The FIR says the officer formed a “nexus with notorious smugglers from Raxaul and other nearby places” to help move illegal goods. In exchange, he reportedly received benefits from those involved. His time at the border matched a period when smuggling of items like gold, drugs, and consumer goods was common, due to the open India-Nepal border and easy movement at certain points.
Investigators have also found suspicious financial transactions linked to the officer and his family. The FIR mentions several bank accounts in their names with unusual activity, such as large cash deposits made through deposit machines. The agency thinks these deposits are part of a pattern of assets that their known income cannot explain. The financial investigation is a key part of the case, along with the claims of corruption and smuggling.
The CBI has used sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Prevention of Corruption Act in this case. The charges include alleged criminal conspiracy and misuse of official position for personal gain. Officials said they filed the FIR after an initial review of the evidence collected against the officer, who is no longer posted in Sitamarhi.
This case shows the ongoing challenge of keeping integrity among staff working on sensitive borders. The SSB guards the India-Nepal and India-Bhutan borders, where there are no fences and old trade routes make illegal movement easier. Several cases involve local smugglers working with border staff, but successful prosecutions remain rare.
In this case, the CBI is looking at both the connections at Bhangaha and the pattern of cash deposits. They are trying to show a clear link between the alleged smuggling and the officer and his family’s wealth.
Investigators think using cash deposit machines helped avoid handling large amounts of cash directly, while still putting unexplained money into the bank.
The CBI is expected to examine the entire financial trail, identify the smugglers named in the FIR, and determine exactly what goods may have passed through the border outpost while the officer was in charge. Investigators will probably question more witnesses and review duty records from the 20th Battalion as part of the ongoing investigation.
Filing the FIR officially starts the investigation into what the CBI calls organised illegal activity by a serving SSB officer. Whether enough evidence supports charges of smuggling facilitation and corruption under the Prevention of Corruption Act will become clear as the investigation continues in the coming weeks.
