Indecent language on social media a concern, journalism must uphold dignity: BJP MP

BJP MP Alok Sharma has said that while social media has provided new and widespread platforms for expression, the increasing use of indecent and offensive language is a matter of concern for society.
Language is not only a medium of communication, but also a reflection of society's culture and sensitivity, he stated.
"In such times, the responsibility of journalism increases even more to strongly present facts, the dignity of language, and social concerns," Sharma noted.
"The increasing use of indecent, uncivilised, and offensive language is a matter of concern for society," the Lok Sabha member from Bhopal said on Monday.
He was addressing a seminar on 'Hindi Journalism in the Current Perspective' and a journalist felicitation function organised by the Bhopal Press Club.
Sharma's comments came in the backdrop of foul language used by Gen Z protesters on social media and also during their agitations in different parts of the country.
He argued that technology has drastically changed the format and reach of journalism. Now, news reaches millions of people in a matter of moments. In such a situation, maintaining the speed of news along with its credibility, factuality, and dignity of language is a significant challenge, the parliamentarian maintained.
Hindi journalism has always played a vital role in shaping society and giving voice to public concerns. Even in changing times, its credibility remains its greatest strength, Sharma emphasised.
Senior journalist Mahesh Shrivastava opined that the nature of journalism is changing and fresh opportunities are emerging with the advent of new technology.
It is important to understand these changes while maintaining the core concerns of journalism, he stressed.
Senior journalists Ajay Bokil and Girish Upadhyay were present as special guests.
Social media has accelerated the dissemination of news. This has also brought new challenges to journalism, which the media community must address with professional competence and collective efforts, Bokil told the seminar.
Upadhyay argued that journalism has always faced challenges, but in the era of artificial intelligence (AI), their nature is changing.
Amidst the growing influence of technology, facts, language, analysis, and readers' trust will remain a journalist's true assets, he said.
Since its inception, the Bhopal Press Club has honoured nearly 400 journalists for their dedication towards journalism, club patron Satish Saxena said on the occasion.
