BJP launches Karawal Nagar sewer project

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta and Delhi BJP president Harsh Malhotra on Sunday announced a Rs 138-crore sewer infrastructure project for Karawal Nagar, promising major improvements in drainage, drinking water supply, and civic facilities in several parts of North-East Delhi.
The announcement was made during a public programme organised by the Delhi BJP in Karawal Nagar to mark 12 years of the Narendra Modi-led Central Government. Local MLA and Delhi Minister Kapil Mishra was present along with MP Manoj Tiwari, Water Minister Parvesh Sahib Singh, MLA Ajay Mahawar, and BJP district president Dr UK Chaudhary.
Addressing the gathering, the Chief Minister said the sewer project would cover Sonia Vihar, Milan Garden, Chauhan Patti, Sabhapur Extension, and nearby colonies.
She said work on the project had already begun and would help resolve long-standing civic problems faced by residents.
The Chief Minister said development works worth more than Rs 300 crore had been approved in Karawal Nagar during the past year through the Chief Minister’s Development Fund, MLA Fund, and Yamuna Paar Development Board. She said the government was focusing on expanding sewer networks, improving drainage systems, and upgrading basic infrastructure in the area. She also said old water pipelines were being replaced and ageing sewer systems were being cleaned through mechanised methods to improve sanitation and drinking water supply.
According to the Chief Minister, three Atal Canteens have already started functioning in the constituency, while approval has been granted for three Arogya Mandirs to strengthen healthcare services. She added that the government would also consider demands for a new hospital in the region.
The Chief Minister said road construction and drainage works were underway in several areas, including Sabhapur Extension and the stretch from Rampal Chowk to Shiv Mandir. She also announced plans to pursue widening and beautification of the road from the Signature Bridge to Pushta Road.
She further said the government was exploring the possibility of developing a riverfront project along the Yamuna in Sonia Vihar, which could boost tourism and regional development.
Delhi BJP president Harsh Malhotra said the Narendra Modi government had continued to provide infrastructure projects to Delhi even when the BJP remained in opposition in the city for most of the past 12 years. He referred to projects such as metro expansion, road development, the Delhi-Meerut rail corridor, Bharat Mandapam, and the convention centre in Dwarka.
Water Minister Parvesh Sahib Singh said previous governments failed to create proper sewer infrastructure in the constituency, leading to untreated sewage flowing into the Yamuna. He said work had now started on laying 43 kilometres of sewer lines across Karawal Nagar colonies. Kapil Mishra said earlier governments had delayed sewer projects, citing environmental restrictions and mapping issues. He claimed many sewer lines laid earlier had never become operational and were now being cleaned and activated.
He said development projects worth nearly Rs 150 crore had already been launched in four colonies, and every household in the constituency would eventually be connected to the sewer network. MP Manoj Tiwari said North-East Delhi had transformed significantly since 2014.
