Bihar to replace ‘Fail’ with ‘Eligible for Skill Development’ in Class 10, 12 marksheets
The Bihar government has decided to replace the word “Fail” with “Eligible for Skill Development” in the marksheets of students appearing for Class 10 and Class 12 board examinations from the current academic session, officials said on Saturday.
The move is aimed at helping students who do not clear their examinations pursue vocational training programmes offered by the Bihar Board of Open Schooling and Examination (BBOSE).
Education Minister Mithlesh Tiwary said the Education Department would amend the rules and issue necessary instructions to the Bihar School Examination Board (BSEB).
“Instead of ‘Fail’, the certificates will carry the term ‘Eligible for Skill Development’,” Tiwary told reporters.
He said students’ abilities should not be judged solely by their performance in an examination.
Tiwary also announced that students appearing for the Class 10 supplementary examinations would be given special one-month sessions to help them prepare better and improve their chances of clearing the examination.
The initiative is part of the government’s efforts to provide remedial support and prevent students from falling behind after an unsuccessful examination attempt, officials said.
The state government has also been introducing measures to encourage learning beyond conventional classroom teaching. One such initiative is the ‘no-bag day’ on Saturdays in government schools.
Under the arrangement announced on August 6, government schools will function from 9.30 am to 1 pm on Saturdays, while their regular timings from Monday to Friday will remain 9.30 am to 4 pm.
