Ganga erosion in Bihar swallows land, century-old temple in Raghopur
Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Vijay Kumar Choudhary on Tuesday said the situation in Raghopur in Bhagalpur district was "challenging and difficult" as severe erosion by Ganga has swallowed vast stretches of land, causing widespread destruction.
The nearly century-old Chaiti Durga Temple, a revered religious landmark in the area, was swept away by the swollen Ganga during the day.
Choudhary, who also holds the Water Resources Department (WRD) portfolio, told PTI that the situation in Raghopur was "challenging and difficult," with severe erosion taking place along the Ganga.
He said erosion at several locations had created pressure zones, while senior departmental officials and engineers were present on the ground and efforts to check the erosion were underway.
"The situation remains serious due to unexpected changes in the flow of the Ganga," the deputy CM said.
He returned to Patna on Tuesday after leaving his meeting in New Delhi midway in view of the situation.
During the previous floods, when a pressure zone had developed at the spot, the department had undertaken substantial anti-erosion measures there.
"The Ganga, in keeping with its natural course, has been causing erosion. The situation remains sensitive, and the department is making continuous efforts to bring it under control," he said.
"The Bhagalpur district administration and WRD officials are on high alert following the situation. Rise in the Ganga's water level and changes in its flow, with heavy silt deposition and strong currents, are triggering erosion at several places", WRD secretary Chandrashekhar Singh told PTI.
Residents of vulnerable areas are being alerted and arrangements are being made for evacuation, if required.
"The situation around the Mahadevpur embankment remains challenging due to the strong currents and continuing erosion. A substantial portion of the embankment has been secured through protective works, though erosion and scouring continue near the structure," he said.
"Relief measures are being undertaken for the affected people. A community kitchen will be operated tonight at Middle School, Shankarpur, Nathnagar, in addition to four such kitchens already functioning at different locations.
"Relief camps are also being arranged as required, with facilities including food, drinking water and healthcare. A relief camp is being set up at Ganesh Basa near Janvi Chowk," the district administration said in a statement.
Bhagalpur District Magistrate Alankrita Pandey appealed to residents to remain alert, prioritise the safety of people, essential belongings and livestock, and follow official advisories.
The administration also urged people not to pay heed to rumours and assured them that all necessary relief and rescue measures would be undertaken in the event of an emergency.
