Assam Police arrest 330 in crackdown on fraudsters impersonating cops

Around 330 people accused of involvement in various fraudulent activities, including impersonating police personnel and extorting money from people, have been arrested in a special crackdown in Assam, Director General of Police Harmeet Singh said.

The operation began early Saturday and was still underway, with the number of arrests expected to increase, the DGP said.

Some of the suspects have been traced outside Assam, including in cities such as Hyderabad and Bengaluru, and police teams are working to bring them under the net, Singh said.

“Around 330 people, accused of being involved in various fraudulent activities, have been arrested in a crackdown since early Saturday,” he said.

According to the DGP, those arrested were allegedly involved in several types of fraud, including promising to settle police cases in exchange for money, impersonating police officials and threatening people over phone calls to extort money.

“The police have been working against these frauds. This special crackdown is being carried out as per the instructions of the chief minister,” Singh said.

Police are continuing to investigate the networks allegedly involved in such fraudulent activities and are tracing suspects operating from outside the state.

Further arrests are expected as the crackdown continues.
