Assam govt to withdraw cases lodged against NEET protestors, release those detained

The Assam government has decided to withdraw police cases registered against protesters involved in demonstrations over the NEET question paper leak and release those arrested or detained during the protests, according to an official notification.

Five cases were registered in the state in connection with protests led by students and youth, resulting in the arrest of 13 people.

The notification issued last night said those arrested or detained would be released promptly and no adverse legal action would be initiated against anyone involved in the protests.

The Home and Political Department said the process to withdraw the cases, irrespective of the stage of proceedings, would be initiated promptly as per law. The government also said the matter would be treated as closed without any future proceedings on this account.

The decision was taken after considering the circumstances and the need to strengthen accountability and undertake systemic reforms in the examination and higher education system, the notification said.

Guwahati witnessed a large-scale protest on July 23 over the NEET question paper leak, demanding the resignation of Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and expressing solidarity with activist Sonam Wangchuk and students seeking education reforms.

Students, parents, educators and citizens participated in the demonstration, demanding transparency, accountability and justice for NEET aspirants.
