In the old royal courts, gold sat on the neck and pearls were sewn into silk. Awigna’s Zevar carries that craft into modern wedding wear
Historically, royal Indian courts maintained a strict hierarchy of adornment. Heavy gold and uncut diamonds rested over handwoven silks, keeping textiles and jewels as two entirely separate entities of power. The artisan painted the canvas with thread, while the goldsmith provided the solid armour. Today, that ancient boundary shatters completely.
Zevar, the new collection from Delhi label Awigna, brings those two crafts together. Marking a significant shift in festive couture, the newest line named Zevar steps onto the runway. The word translates to jewellery. The creators made sure these garments absorb this historical language directly into the fabric itself. Master craftspeople translated the delicate motifs of fine ornaments into surface embroidery. Think about the heavy bangles, intricate chokers or heavy armbands women traditionally wear. Instead of layering separate metal pieces, these exact motifs are now intricately woven down the sheer sleeves and necklines using thick pearls, light-catching Swarovski elements and cut crystals. The depth here is completely intentional. Anchoring these gems deeply into the weave gives every silhouette a striking three-dimensional glow. This design choice frees the wearer from the physical burden of heavy antique sets, because the clothes do the work of the jewellery.
The visual narrative reveals a beautiful balance between historic weight and modern lightness. Vivid bridal reds appeared heavily laden with golden encrustations and veiled in sheer netting. Traditional opulence found an airy counterpoint in soft blush peach ensembles featuring sweeping, meticulously beaded jackets where the sleeves glisten like stacked bracelets. Deep emerald greens offered striking evening alternatives, particularly a slick draped skirt paired with a crystal-fringed crop top alongside a dramatic scalloped cape set. An ethereal pale ivory creation also commanded attention, featuring sleeves shimmering under fine metallic accents that mimic royal arm cuffs.
By treating embellishment as actual jewellery, the creators present a wonderfully crafted approach to modern festive dressing.
How to wear it this wedding season
- Go easy on the real jewellery. The outfit is already doing that job. A pair of studs or one good ring is plenty. Let the embroidery be your necklace.
- Keep the hair simple. A sleek low bun or soft open waves will show off all that detailing far better than a busy hairdo.
- Think past the main day. Soft colours and a lighter touch make these pieces perfect for a day mehendi, a cocktail night or your sister’s sangeet. And you’ll want to wear them again next season.
