AIDA, IIT Delhi launch white paper on India’s Flex-Fuel mobility roadmap beyond E20
The All India Distillers’ Association (AIDA) and IIT Delhi have unveiled a landmark white paper outlining a roadmap for scaling Flex-Fuel Vehicles (FFVs) as India moves towards the next phase of its ethanol and clean mobility journey beyond E20.
The white paper, titled “Flex-Fuel Vehicles: Enabling Energy Security and Sustainable Mobility in India,” was launched at the AIDA Green Energy Seminar 2026, which brought together policymakers, automotive leaders, ethanol producers, fuel companies, researchers and technology experts.
The study examines key elements required for large-scale FFV adoption, including vehicle technology, fuel pricing, infrastructure readiness, sustainable feedstock, consumer acceptance, financing and market development. It presents a prioritised ten-point policy roadmap covering immediate and long-term measures to build a commercially viable flex-fuel ecosystem.
The paper argues that FFVs can strengthen energy security, reduce crude oil dependence, expand consumer fuel choice and support cleaner mobility while leveraging India’s growing domestic ethanol production capacity.
Alongside the IIT Delhi publication, CRID India launched its white paper, “Towards a Sustainable Bioenergy Future for India: Feedstock Security, Land-Water Balance and The Path Beyond E20.”
The study examines how India can expand ethanol production while balancing food security, agricultural sustainability, land use and water resources. It also provides an evidence-based assessment of the “food versus fuel” debate.
According to the study, ethanol-attributable land in 2023-24 was approximately 3.46 million hectares, or around 1.58 per cent of India’s gross cropped area.
Together, the two white papers present a holistic vision for India’s post-E20 future, addressing sustainable ethanol production on the supply side and the mobility pathway through Flex-F.
