AI agents reshaping higher education as teaching partners

The rise of AI agents is redefining learning, bridging classrooms with real-world practice
As universities across India prepare to welcome a new batch of MBA and BBA students in July and early August, the familiar rhythm of a new academic session is about to begin. Classrooms will fill up, new courses will start, and faculty will once again focus on delivering concepts, frameworks, and case studies. Yet, this year feels slightly different. Not because the syllabus has changed dramatically, but because the environment in which students learn has changed. Artificial intelligence is no longer just a tool that students occasionally use. It is quietly becoming a constant presence — one that is beginning to influence how learning actually happens.
For the past few years, much of the discussion around AI in education has focused on tools: chatbots, content generators, and ‘assignment helpers’. The concern has largely been about misuse: students using AI to write assignments or complete tasks. A recent case reported in the media, involving a professor at Brown University, highlighted how students performed significantly better in take-home exams than in in-class assessments, raising concerns about the role of AI. While these concerns are valid, they may be missing the bigger picture.
Emergence of AI agents
We are now seeing the emergence of something more significant: AI agents.
Unlike earlier tools, AI agents are not just systems that respond to questions. They can guide students, suggest next steps, interact in a more continuous manner, and adapt to individual needs. In simple terms, they behave more like a digital assistant that works alongside the student or teacher, rather than a tool that is used occasionally. This shift has important implications for higher education, especially for professional courses like MBA and BBA, where the goal is not just knowledge, but application.
One of the most promising roles AI agents can play is in personalised learning. Every classroom has students with different levels of understanding, different speeds of learning, and different interests. Traditionally, it has been difficult for a faculty member to address all these variations within limited time. AI agents can help bridge this gap by providing additional explanations, practice questions, and feedback tailored to individual students. But this is not the most important change.
Bringing the ‘Real World’ into the classroom
From my own experience of four decades in industry, I believe the real value of AI agents lies elsewhere: in their ability to bring the real world into the classroom.
An AI agent can independently identify and curate the most relevant real-world industry examples across a wide range of subjects, often supplementing them with videos, case studies, and up-to-date insights. In contrast, a faculty member attempting the same task would require significant time and may still struggle to match the breadth, recency, and precision of examples that AI can provide. As a result, AI agents can significantly enhance the quality and relevance of learning materials when used effectively. One of the persistent gaps in management education is the difference between what is taught and what actually happens in organisations. Textbooks and academic frameworks are necessary, but they often simplify reality. Faculty members with purely academic backgrounds may not always have the latest exposure to how businesses are evolving on the ground.
Transformative role of AI agents
This is where AI agents can play a transformative role.
Imagine a classroom discussion on inventory management. Traditionally, students would learn models such as EOQ, safety stock, and demand forecasting. They might study a few case studies, often dated or simplified. Now, imagine an AI agent that can supplement this discussion by providing current examples: how a large FMCG company is managing distribution challenges, how a cement manufacturer is dealing with demand fluctuations, or how a steel company is optimising supply chains in a volatile market. This kind of dynamic, real-time input can make learning far more meaningful.
Students are not just understanding concepts; they are seeing how those concepts are being applied, adapted, and sometimes even ignored in real-world situations. This exposure is extremely valuable, especially for students who have little or no prior work experience.
Bridge between academia and industry
In that sense, AI agents can act as a bridge between academia and industry. Another area where AI agents can support learning is in continuous feedback. In a typical classroom, feedback is limited: assignments are graded, exams are conducted, and occasional comments are provided. AI systems, however, can offer more frequent and immediate feedback, helping students understand where they are going wrong and how they can improve.
AI agents will also enable continuous, personalised learning beyond the classroom, adapting content, pace, and feedback to individual student needs. By integrating real-time data and contextual insights, they can support faculty in identifying learning gaps early, fostering deeper engagement, and ultimately improving academic outcomes and student success.
At the same time, AI agents can assist faculty members in routine but time-consuming tasks such as grading, preparing teaching material, and designing assessments. This is already beginning to happen in many parts of the world, where AI is being used to evaluate written responses and generate customised learning content. If used thoughtfully, this can free up faculty time for more important activities, mentoring students, facilitating discussions, and bringing in their own insights and experiences.
Not a replacement for teachers
However, it is important to be clear about one thing: AI agents are not a replacement for teachers.
Teaching, especially in higher education, is not just about delivering content. It involves judgement, context, values, and human interaction. AI can support these processes, but it cannot fully replicate them. In fact, the role of the teacher may become even more important-to guide students on how to use AI effectively, how to question its outputs, and how to apply learning in real-life situations. There are also legitimate concerns that need to be addressed. Over-reliance on AI can weaken critical thinking if students start accepting answers without questioning them. Issues of data privacy, accuracy, and bias also need careful attention. Institutions will need to develop clear guidelines on how AI should be used in teaching and assessment.
But these challenges should not lead us to resist the technology altogether. Every major shift in education, from the introduction of calculators to the use of the internet, has raised similar concerns. Over time, institutions have adapted, and teaching methods have evolved. AI agents represent the next phase of this evolution.
Key is to integrate AI meaningfully
The key question for educators is not whether AI should be used, but how it should be integrated meaningfully. As the new academic session begins, this may be a good time for institutions and faculty members to reflect on this shift. Instead of viewing AI only as a risk to be managed, it can be seen as an opportunity to enhance learning, especially by making it more connected to the realities of the business world.
If used well, AI agents can help move management education closer to its ultimate objective: preparing students not just to pass examinations, but to understand and navigate the complexities of real organisations.
The transition from tools to teaching partners has already begun. The institutions that recognise this early, and adapt thoughtfully, are likely to create more engaging and relevant learning experiences for their students. The real promise of AI agents lies in their ability to bring the world into the classroom, and prepare students for the world they will step into.
