Adhikari holds Vande Mataram rally outside JU, says campus needs to be mended

Days after the violent clashes between the supporters of the ABVP and Left-wing student groups inside the elite Jadavpur University campus, Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari on Friday held a massive Vande Mataram rally outside the campus — otherwise considered a strong Left bastion — from where he gave a call to “mend JU as the JNU and Osmania University were corrected.”
Adhikari was speaking at an “apolitical” programme where Vande Mataram was sung by ten thousand people.
Launching a scathing attack against the Leftist forces for raising “Azadi” slogans, he said, “this kind of anti-national slogans must stop in the education campus. “I am hurt when the slogans of Azadi are raised on the streets of Kolkata… What is Azadi? The country achieved Independence a long time back… For Azadi, Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, Khudiram Bose, Bhagat Singh and many others laid down their lives… after that Azadi (freedom) what kind of Azadi these people are talking about… the only Azadi that we need now is the Azadi of Pakistan-occupied Kashmir and that we will be achieved soon.”
Alleging that “slogans like Kashmir mange Azadi or those supporting slain Maoist leader Kishenji were regularly raised from the campuses”, he said, “TMC supported these elements to prosper… but not anymore… those days are gone… we will not allow such slogans inside the campus.”
He said, often slogans like “‘Red Salute Kishenji’ is written on the walls of Jadavpur University. What does a section of the new generation want? Who is this Kishenji? He never believed in the Indian Constitution.”
Reminding that the educational campus like Jadavpur University was a place of excellence where education should be the only concern of the students, he asked whether the Left students’ wings demanded freedom to use “cannabis, heroin and drugs”, warning “now drones would be flown inside the campus” to find out who all were taking drugs.
Asking why the Left would not take out rallies when CRPF jawans were brutally killed in Jammu and Kashmir or why Hindus were slain in Pahalgaon because of their identities. “When CRPF jawans were killed or when Hindus were shot dead by ascertaining their identities, why do these Left-wing people not take out rallies… and why do they take out rallies only during the India-Pakistan war, when India would be about to demolish the enemy?” he asked.
