Adani Power, Bhutan's Druk sign pact for 770 MW hydropower project

Adani Power on Tuesday said it has signed an agreement with Bhutan's state-owned Druk Green Power Corporation Ltd (DGPC) to develop the 770 MW Chamkharchhu-I Hydroelectric Project in the Himalayan kingdom.
Adani Power and DGPC signed a Shareholders Agreement (SHA) for the project, the company said in a statement.
The project is the second major hydropower collaboration between the two companies, following their agreement for the 570 MW Wangchhu Hydroelectric Project in September 2025.
It is also part of a broader Memorandum of Understanding signed between the Adani Group and DGPC in May 2025 for developing 5,000 MW of hydropower capacity in Bhutan.
The signing ceremony was attended by Bhutan Prime Minister Lyonchhen Dasho Tshering Tobgay and other dignitaries.
The 770 MW project, a peaking run-of-river scheme, will come up on the Chamkharchhu River in central Bhutan's Zhemgang district.
It will be developed under the Build, Own, Operate and Transfer (BOOT) model through a 49:51 equity partnership between Adani Power and DGPC. The project will have a 30-year concession period from the date of commercial operation.
Construction is expected to begin in the first half of 2027, with commissioning targeted within six years of the start of construction.
The project is expected to add to Bhutan's clean energy generation capacity and strengthen regional energy cooperation, including the export of surplus power to India during the summer months.
"Hydropower will play a pivotal role in accelerating South Asia's energy transition, and this project will contribute significantly to enhancing energy security, reducing carbon intensity, and advancing shared sustainability goals," Adani Power Managing Director Anil Sardana said.
He said the project would also enable Bhutan to export surplus green power to India during the summer months.
DGPC Managing Director Dasho Chhewang Rinzin said the project would strengthen Bhutan's energy security, particularly during the winter months, while creating opportunities to optimise and export surplus clean energy to India.
