63-year-old man killed after tree falls on shop amid heavy rains in Mumbai

A 63-year-old man lost his life after a large tree collapsed onto a shop in Mumbai's Kurla area amid relentless monsoon rains on Sunday. The victim was trapped under the debris after the tree fell on the structure near BMC Hindi School in Kurla (West).
Rescue teams rushed to the spot, pulled him out, and shifted him to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
The incident comes as Mumbai continues to experience heavy rainfall under a red alert issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD). Civic authorities have been responding to multiple rain-related emergencies, including waterlogging, traffic disruptions and tree collapses across the city. The latest fatality has further raised concerns over public safety during the monsoon season.
This is one of several rain-related deaths reported in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region in recent days, prompting renewed scrutiny of civic preparedness and maintenance of ageing trees and infrastructure. Authorities are expected to investigate the circumstances surrounding the collapse while continuing emergency response efforts as heavy rainfall is forecast to persist.
