A 19-year-old youth was arrested for allegedly raping a 16-year-old girl who later committed suicide, police said.
The incident took place under Kurhwar police station in Sultanpur on Tuesday but came to light only when the girl, who attempted suicide, died in the hospital.
The sister of the accused, Saurabh Agrahari, got married into a family which lives next to the girl's house. The accused had come to visit his sister last Tuesday when he allegedly raped the girl.
The accused was known to the girl, said Station House Officer Sandeep Kumar Rai.
Distressed over the incident, the girl attempted suicide on Wednesday. As her condition deteriorated, she was taken to Lucknow for treatment. She died on Friday, he said.
After the death of the girl, the family lodged a report and finally on Saturday night, the local police raided the house of the accused and arrested him, Rai said on Sunday.
Meanwhile, in another shocking incident, a 16-year-old boy allegedly raped a 7-year-old girl in Mainpuri district. The incident took place on Thursday.
The accused was arrested by the police.
The boy reportedly raped the girl on the pretext of giving her chocolates. On Thursday the girl was playing near her residence when the accused took her to an isolated place by luring her on the pretext of giving her chocolates. The boy lives in the minor girl's locality.
Locals gathered on the spot after hearing the girl's screams. They informed the police. After getting the information, cops reached the spot. The minor girl was admitted to a nearby hospital for treatment. Her condition is reported to be stable. The girl's mother lodged a complaint against the 16-year-old boy.
The accused was arrested and produced before the juvenile court. The police launched a detailed investigation into the matter.
In another incident of sexual assault against minors, a 22-year-old man allegedly raped a minor in Gautam Buddha Nagar. The accused lives in the girl's neighbourhood. He reportedly raped the girl on the pretext of dropping her to school.
The police arrested the accused on the basis of the complaint filed by the girl's mother. The 22-year-old accused also reportedly threatened the girl to kill her if she revealed the incident to anyone.
