Yogi resigns from UP Legislative Council

After leading the BJP to a comfortable victory in the just-concluded Assembly elections,  Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath tendered his resignation from the membership of UP Legislative Council. Yogi sent his resignation to the Chairman of the Legislative Council on Monday evening.

A five-time MP from Gorakhpur, Yogi was elected for the first time as an MLA from Gorakhpur (Urban) Assembly seat by a margin of 1.03 lakh votes defeating SP candidate Subhawati Upendra Dutt Shukla. Earlier on September 8, 2017, Yogi Adityanath was elected to the UP Legislative Council after he was made the Chief Minister. Adityanath will be the first Chief Minister in the last 37 years to return to power after completing a full term in Uttar Pradesh. The BJP retained power in the state by winning 255 of the 403 Assembly constituencies, securing a 41.29 per cent vote share.

Incidentally, it is almost after two decades that a leader who is a member of the Legislative Assembly will be the Chief Minister. The last Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh to be elected an MLA, was Mulayam Singh Yadav in 2003, when he won election from Gunnaur seat. His predecessors - Mayawati (2007-2012), Akhilesh Yadav (2012-2017) and Yogi Adityanath (2017-2022) were members of the Legislative Council. This would be the 18th assembly where Yogi Adityanath would be the Leader of the House after being sworn in as Chief Minister on March 25.
