The UP government, on Thursday, claimed that Uttar Pradesh was the only state where mafia and dons were running for their lives as Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath was pursuing a policy of zero tolerance towards crime.
With a missionary zeal since 2017 when he took over as the chief minister of the state, Yogi Adityanath has seen to it that most of the dreaded criminals and dons of the state were put behind bars, claimed the government's official spokesman here on Thursday.
The spokesman claimed that at present, 25 mafia were in UP's prisons, serving their sentences as any common prisoner. Besides, he said, the UP Police had bulldozed and attached immovable properties of the dons worth over Rs 1,000 crore (Rs100 million), sending them into a state of panic.
He said as the chief minister promised, the criminals were either inside jails serving their sentences or they were seeking shelter in other states. "While the fear of the government is giving sleepless nights to them even in other states, it has restored people's faith in the state police and administration to a great extent," the spokesman said.
Not only dreaded gangsters like Mukhtar Ansari and Atiq Ahmed, but also others with criminal antecedents have been hunted down by the same UP Police in the last four years of Yogi rule that remained subdued during previous regimes as their hands were tied for lack of political will.
The Yogi government has destroyed many criminal gangs operating in the state, hunting down mafia and their associates and making strong chargesheets against them in courts. The seized properties of the associates of the gangsters are estimated to be worth Rs 537 crore.
Meanwhile, the Yogi government has also revoked more than 190 arms licences of notorious gangsters, their family members and aides. Until December last year, 3,699 accused had been arrested and sent to jail while 11,930 cases were registered under the Gangsters Act. Apart from this, National Security Act (NSA) has been slapped on 534 accused.
