To curb the menace of capitation fees, the Yogi Government has fixed fees for medical and dental colleges for the next three academic sessions issuing a clear cut warning that violators will be severely dealt with.
The fees for five-year MBBS course has been fixed between Rs 8.50 lakh and Rs 11.50 lakh depending on the colleges while that for BDS course has been fixed at Rs 1.37 lakh and Rs 3.65 lakh. This fee structure will be applicable for academic sessions 2017-18, 2018-19 and 2019-20.
Earlier, the government had fixed Rs 11.50 lakh as fees for medical colleges and Rs 3.25 lakh as fees for dental colleges. But the fees structure was limited to only one academic session of 2016-17.
Medical Education minister Ashutosh Tandon said that there was report of fleecing by private medical colleges on the name of fees. Once, the Government has fixed a fee structure, all medical and dental colleges are bound to follow the directive.
“After the government received complaints of harassment, a committee was set up to suggest an affordable fee structure of medical and dental colleges. The committee gave its recommendations following which the new fee structure was suggested and after giving a serious thought, the government has decided to implement it in letter and spirit,” the Medical Education minister said.
This government decision will be binding on all 23 medical colleges and 13 dental colleges of the state.
There were reports that some private medical colleges were charging anything between Rs 21-23 lakh for five-year MBBS course and around Rs 9 -13 lakh for Dental course.
Tandon said that whatever the Government has decided has been fixed. “No institution will be allowed to charge capitation fees over and above the fixed fee. Complaints in this regard will be severely dealt with,” he warned.
