After rape of half a dozen girls on Monday, yet another case of self-immolation by a woman due to sexual harassment was reported from Pilibhit while miscreants attempted to rape a minor in Jaunpur on Tuesday morning.

As per reports, Sunita (name changed) of Harihar area of Bhedkhanda in Pilibhit doused herself with kerosene and set herself ablaze on Tuesday morning. While Sunita succumbed to burns, her husband also suffered burns while trying to rescue her. The victim's husband later claimed that their neighbour Pramod Kumar was harassing his wife for the last few days and made sexual advances which upset Sunita.

He added that depressed with Kumar's lewd advances, Sunita warned him that she would complain to the police. Undeterred, the miscreant molested Sunita on Monday night. Fed up with this, Sunita finally committed suicide, the husband said.

The police, however, denied sexual harassment charges against Kumar. The police claimed that Pramod Kumar, in an inebriated state, rammed his bike into a cot on which Sunita's eight-year-old daughter was sleeping outside the house. This resulted in a confrontation between Kumar and Sunita as her husband was away on duty. The police maintained that annoyed with Pramod’s behaviour, Sunita ended her life on Tuesday morning. Investigations were on in the matter.

Meanwhile, in Jaunpur, Raksha (name changed) used to live with her kin at Sambhauti area of Sikrana and was a student of class VII at an Inter College in Husepur area of Jalalpur.

On Tuesday morning, while Raksha was returning home after her classes, three locals, identified as lavkush (16), Naman Srivastava (15) and Vikram Pathak (14), intercepted her. They pulled her into roadside shrubs and tried to gangrape her. luckily for the victim, some villagers were passing by and they rescued the girl and managed to nab the miscreants after a chase. The trio were later handed over to the police who registered a case and sent them to jail.
