Walkout in UP Assembly over  Varanasi temples ‘demolition’

Published on:

Congress members in the Uttar Pradesh assembly staged a noisy walkout over “demolition” of temples and buildings for the Kashi Vishwanath corridor in Varanasi and recovery of hundreds of Shivalings from the debris.

The Congress members led by their leader Ajay Kumar Lalu trouped into the Well of the House when it assembled on Thursday, demanding resignation of Yogi Adityanath government for “playing with the sentiments of 125 crore ‘Sanatan Dharma’ followers”.

“This government swears by the name of bhagwan (god) and in Shiv ki nagri the government is demolishing temples and throwing away Shivalings. What kind of devotion is this,” Lalu asked as Speaker Hridaya Narayan Dikshit asked him to go to his seat.

The Congress Legislature Party leader said that the authorities in Varanasi were throwing away the Shivalings and other idols in the name of making Kashi Vishwanath corridor. He said the Congress would not tolerate this.

The Speaker tried to pacify the Congress members but they did not budge. Later, when the government refused to say anything, the Congress members staged a noisy walkout.
