Declaring that he would contest next election from Sultanpur Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) national general secretary and party's MP from Pilibhit, Varun Gandhi said that he would start development projects in the area a son and not any leader.

"I don't intend to be a ruler. Instead, I want to serve you as a son," Gandhi said addressing his first public meeting at a school ground in Kadipur in Sultanpur on Tuesday. "If developmental works can be carried out in Kannauj, Amethi and Jaswant Nagar, then why condition of roads and frequency of power supply cannot improve in Sultanpur. People here too crave for development," he said in his short but forceful speech.

Though, BJP is yet to declare its list of candidates, Varun Gandhi is likely to contest from the Sultanpur parliamentary constituency. He is currently an MP from Pilibhit. He said Sultanpur is like another home for him. This small vibrant city has deep connection with my family.    "I was an infant in my mother's arm, when I came here for the first time. People showered their love and affection on me. Now, I have returned as a man. let me shoulder your burden. I want to return all the love to the people by doing something fruitful work for them," he said.

After Varun's entry in Sultanpur, three persons from Nehru-Gandhi would be in the race of 2014 General Elections. Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi has been representing Amethi lok Sabha constituency that falls in Sultanpur district while party President Sonia Gandhi is MP from neighbouring Rae Bareli. Virtually launching the party's poll campaigning in east UP, Gandhi said, "The entire region has held tremendous emotional and symbolic importance not only for me but for my family for the last three generations. My grandmother, father and uncle started their political career from here. It is thus important for not only me but my family to pay obeisance to the region."

Without taking the name of any political outfit, Gandhi said that developmental work in the state has come a naught. "The BJP wants to support people in the coming elections. We promise to change the political face of the state by working for the poors and the down-trodden," he said. Gandhi first paid obeisance to lord Hanuman at Tretayug and then headed towards his rally site at Kadipur. A mob of agitating bank employees also intercepted the cavalcade of Gandhi and handed him a memorandum related to their demands. The enraged mob was staging the protest near the State Bank of India's (SBI) main branch in Galla Mandi, when the protestors halted the BJP leader and handed him a memorandum of their demands. Gandhi assured that he will try his best to support their justified demands.
