Uttar Pradesh Rajya Vidyut Upbhokta Parishad (UPRVUP) has urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to make audit of all private sector power generation companies by the Comptroller general of India (CAG) mandatory.

“A CAG audit is necessary to save the power sector from corruption and for this a new law is required,” said UP Rajya Vidyut Upbhokta Parishad president Awadhesh Kumar Verma here on Friday.

Verma has written a letter to the PM regarding the Vidyut Upbhokta Parishad demand, seeking his intervention to save the power sector from “disaster”.

“The private power companies are misusing and diverting funds collected from consumers through their high rate of tariff  as they are not  covered by the CAG audit radar, while on the other side, the public sector companies are facing huge losses due to their commitment to the consumers,” he said.

Private companies owned by different industrial houses own around 45 per cent of the total installed power generation capacity in the country. Of the total installed power generation capacity of 3,44,698 megawatt, the private power companies generate 1,57,136 megawatt electricity.

“These private power companies are increasing their power generation capacity every year and are also entering in a big way in power transmission and distribution sector,” he pointed out.

“The private sector power companies have consistently opposed audit by the CAG and this shows that they have something to hide from the government and the people and their shareholders,” Verma said in his letter sent to the PM.
