The legislative Council witnessed uproarious scenes with an agitated Opposition creating a ruckus over the controversial statement made by cabinet minister Nand Gopal Gupta ‘Nandi’ against senior leaders of Samajwadi Party and Bahujan Samaj Party. The agitated members rushed to the Well of the House and sat on a dharna demanding removal of the minister. After the Opposition refused to take their seats, the House was later adjourned. The House will now meet on March 12.

During a meeting in Allahabad three days back, Nandi had compared senior SP and BSP leaders to mythical demons like Ravana, Meghanada, Kumbhkarna and Shurpanakha. Soon after the proceedings of Upper House started on Tuesday, BSP leader Sunil Chittor raised strong objections to Nandi’s statements and demanded that a censure motion be moved against him. leader of Opposition in the Council Ahmed Hasan said that no minister should use such indecent and irresponsible language and action should be immediately initiated. “The BJP is spreading hatred. It will be improper to run the House, if the use of such language is not curtailed. We must also have a discussion on the House,” Hasan asserted.

When Chairman Ramesh Yadav intervened and said the House would take up the matter in Zero Hour, members of the SP and BSP stood up and took objections to it. During this, cabinet minister Swati Singh while defending the government reminded the Opposition of indecent remarks made against her family by former BSP leader Nasimuddin Siddiqui in 2016.

Soon after, SP and BSP members rushe to the Well of the House and started demanding the sacking of Nandi. The Chairman asked the members to return to their seats which failed to cut ice. Taking note of the pandemonium in the House, the Chairman adjourned the House for twenty minutes, thrice as a result, the Question Hour could not be taken up. Soon, the Zero Hour that started at 12 noon amid uproar was also adjourned till 12.30 pm. Similar scenes were witnessed when the House re-assembled which led the Chairman adjourning the House for the day.
