UP govt plans to establish State Sports Authority

In a bid to enhance facilities for players in the state, the Uttar Pradesh government is gearing up to establish the ‘UP Sports Authority’, taking inspiration from the successful model implemented in Gujarat.

“The proposed authority will function as an independent unit and the Sports department has prepared a comprehensive proposal which will soon be presented to the cabinet for approval. Once authorised, the process of setting up the sports authority will commence, making UP the second state in the country to establish a ‘State Sports Authority’, following Gujarat,” a senior government official told this reporter here on Thursday.

Until now, sports-related programmes and initiatives aimed at promoting athletes have been undertaken through the Directorate of Sports in the state. “However, the government believes that an independent unit is necessary to further develop sports in UP, enabling better infrastructure facilities and fostering player encouragement,” the official said.

During a recent meeting with Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, Additional Chief Secretary Navneet Sehgal proposed the establishment of a ‘State Sports Authority’ in UP. The chief minister has given initial consent to the proposal, prompting the Sports department to draft a comprehensive plan for the formation of the authority. Expert opinions are being sought to determine the operational framework of the authority. Sources indicate that the proposal will soon be presented to the cabinet for approval, following which the establishment process will commence.

As per the proposal, the sports authority will be led by experienced professionals from the sports field, rather than IAS or other civil service officers. The director and secretary positions, as well as other high-ranking roles, will be filled exclusively by individuals with extensive experience in sports.

The government envisions numerous benefits with the establishment of the sports authority. Players can expect access to modern equipment, improved dietary provisions, advanced training facilities and specialised sports medicine centres.

“Moreover, by integrating Lucknow, Saifai and Gorakhpur sports colleges with the authority, overall facilities and opportunities for athletes will be significantly enhanced. The establishment of the authority will also reduce reliance on the government for organising sports competitions and related events,” the official said.

He said the establishment of the ‘UP Sports Authority’ showcases the government’s commitment to the development of sports in the state. It aims to create an ecosystem that not only nurtures athletes but also provides them with the necessary resources and support for achieving excellence.

Meanwhile, under Eklavya Kreeda Kosh, a Khel Saathi mobile app and web portal will also be launched by the government to facilitate players of the state to get all information regarding sporting events and facilities being provided by the UP government.
