UP govt not in hurry to implement Food Security Act

Despite Union Government has given three month to implement Food Security Act, the Uttar Pradesh Government declared that it would not implement this act in a hurry.

‘’The state government is preparing itself for implementing the Act and would be waiting for three months as there is a possibility of amendment in the Act by the new  government,’’ State Food and Supply minister Raghuraj Pratap Singh alias Raja Bhaiyya said while answering a question in the state assembly here on Friday.

He said the Centre has extended the deadline to implement the Food Security act for another three months as earlier the last date to implement was July 5, still the Government is in no hurry

Congress member Anugurah Narain Singh, who raised the question, also alleged that lakhs of people die due to starvation and this new Act would provide food to all the poor. He said the Act was brought by the previous UPA government at the Centre to provide food grains at Rs 2 per kg to the poor.

The treasury bench contested the charge of the Congress member that lakhs of people died due to starvation in the country as they claimed that during the present Samajwadi Party government, not a single death was reported due to starvation.

The minister, however, clarified that till the Food Security Act was implemented in the state, the government was providing subsidised food grains to 40.94 lakh families under Antadoya scheme, 65.64 lakh families under BPl scheme and 348 lakh families under APl scheme.
