The Uttar Pradesh government on Monday claimed to have achieved big success under the ‘zero tolerance policy’ adopted by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath to instill a feeling of security among the common man.

Making this claim here on Monday evening, Additional Chief Secretary (Home) Awanish Kumar Awasthi said that hardened criminals were either sent behind bars or were eliminated in police action.

It may be mentioned that Awasthi made the statement just after entire opposition parties, including Samajwadi Party, Bahujan Samaj Party and Congress, alleged total lawlessness in the state and accused the chief minister of pushing the state into a jungle raj.

Awasthi said that so far, under the leadership of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, the administration had confiscated properties worth over Rs 1,574 crore belonging to criminals and the maximum Rs 1,322 crore worth properties had been confiscated since January 2020.

He said the police registered more than 13,700 cases under Gangsters Act and arrested over 43,000 criminals under the Act and also the properties of these criminals were confiscated under the provisions of the Gangsters Act.

Awasthi further claimed that between March 20, 2017 till June 20, 2021, 139 criminals were killed in police action in different districts and 3,196 were injured. He said during this exercise, 13 policemen were also martyred while 1,122 were injured.

"There is no organised criminal in the state who is roaming freely outside jail. Such criminals are either arrested and sent to jail or killed during police action when cops open fire in self-defence," he said.

Awasthi claimed that the police also identified 25 gangs in the state and further action had been initiated against them. He said the government adopted a zero tolerance policy towards criminals to instill a feeling of security among the common man.
