UP government welcomed the Supreme Court’s judgment on triple talaq, saying it would strengthen the secular foundation of the country.
“The Supreme Court’s decision is historic. India is a secular country, but its definition was distorted on religious grounds. The SC has termed triple talaq as unconstitutional,” the health minister and government spokesman Sidharth Nath Singh said here on Tuesday.
The minister of state for Haj Mohsin Raza on Tuesday hailed the Supreme Court’s verdict on triple talaq and said that the judgment has secured the future of muslim women and also ensuring their social security.
“We welcome the verdict. I had put forth the reaction of the UP government. The view of the government was that all personal laws should be subject to the Constitution. This verdict has secured the future of all those women, who could have been suffering under triple talaq which has nothing to do with the Quran’’. He added that the Constitution is the highest law of the land and the Muslim personal law was like any other law and subservient to the supreme law of the land. “All laws including personal laws must abide by the Constitutional guarantee and constitutional freedom. There is no manner of doubt that this judgment will go a long way,” he asserted.
