UP Council witnesses uproar over law, order situation

The Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council on Friday witnessed uproar over the deteriorating law and order situation, floods and rising coronavirus pandemic.

Soon after the House assembled on Friday, Samajwadi Party state president and MLC Naresh Chandra Uttam demanded that all proceedings be stalled and first a debate be held on the deteriorating law and order, poor flood management and rampant corruption in the COVID-19 fund besides the government’s failure to extend proper treatment to the COVID-19 and other serious patients.

The SP members came to the Well of the House and raised slogans against the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party government.

Council Chairman Ramesh Yadav first appealed to the members to return to their seats but finding them adamant, he adjourned the House for 20 minutes and again for another 20 minutes before extending it till noon.

Soon after the House reassembled in the noon, Yadav again extended adjournment for 20 minutes after witnessing uproar. He said that all the questions for the Question Hour would be deemed to have been taken.

Meanwhile, the members held the government responsible for the poor treatment of COVID-19 patients. They said that in the name of COVID-19 Fund, only extortion and corruption was rampant.

The government denied the allegations and revealed the measures taken to fight the pandemic.

Not satisfied with the government’s reply, the SP members staged a walkout from the House.

The Bahujan Samaj Party members also staged a boycott after they too were not convinced over the figures presented by the ruling party to claim a much better law and order situation in Uttar Pradesh.

The House was adjourned for the day after mourning the death of its former member Ajay Singh.

The House will meet on Saturday but there will be no Question Hour.
