The Uttar Pradesh Congress severely flayed the ruling Bharatiya Janta Party at the Centre for levying high taxes under the Goods and Services Tax (GST) that comes into effect from Friday midnight.
“During the United Progressive Alliance regime, Dr Manmohan Singh had drafted a people-friendly GST with maximum tax slab of 14 percent. The then Gujrat Chief Minister Narendra Modi had oppsoed the move. But after becoming PM, he suddenly underwnt a change of heart and is going to implement the same law but after doubling the tax to 28 percent,” alleged Congress spokesman Krishankant Pandey.
``The NDA government drafted the GST Bill keeping in mind to increase the Government’s revenue. But ignored that the middle class and poor will feel it’s pinch. Under the new tax regime, the common man will have to bear the burden of taxes,”charged Pandey.
The Congress spokesman further said that what was more surprising that is that the Union Government was going to enforce the Bill from Fridaymidnight even when formalities or a proper awareness campaign was yet to be launched.
“Modi went ahead with demonetisation and withdrew Rs 500 and Rs 1000 notes even when their replacements had not been printed by Reserve Bank of India. Similarly, Modi has decided to impose the GST from July 1, without making any preparations. Do not be surprised if Modi announces the date of launch of Bullet train in India even before the tracks were laid,” claimed Pandey.
The Congress leader also claimed that his party was opposed to the gala mid-night celebration of GST at Central Hall of Parliament. ``Mid-night celebration was held thrice -when India got independence and during the silver jubilee of Independence. Celebrating the launch of GST will be an insult to the independence struggle. And hence the Congress party has decided to keep away rom the fucntion,” stressed the Congress spokesman.
