A mentally unstable man went on a stabbing spree, killing his daughter and a woman and injuring four other family members in Jaunpur on Tuesday evening.

While the injured were rushed to a hospital, the assailant was arrested.

Jaunpur Superintendent of Police Raj Karan Nayyar said the accused, Mumtaz aka Sonu, had been arrested and sent to jail.

As per reports, Mumtaz aka Sonu of Badi Khas village had been undergoing treatment at a mental hospital in Varanasi for the past seven years.

On Monday, he was being taken to the Varanasi hospital for consultation but he jumped from the vehicle and fled and reached home later in the evening.

On Tuesday evening, Mumtaz flew into a rage after not finding any eatables in the kitchen and started shouting at his family members. He later picked up a knife and repeatedly stabbed his daughter Hamaira (7) causing instant death. When his mother, Chanda, tried to rescue Hamaira, she too was attacked.

On hearing her cries, as his wife Firdaus, son Mohammad (3) and another kin came out of a room, they too were stabbed.

While fleeing the scene, Mumtaz also stabbed Sulema Devi, who had come to deliver milk.

Reacting to the shrieks of the victims, his neighbours nabbed him and informed the police control room. A police  team later reached there and shifted the injured to the district hospital where Sulema Devi was pronounced dead.

In Muzaffarnagar, Akshat (18) died after his hand got stuck in a machine at a private paper mill on Bhopa Road on Tuesday.

The body was sent for post-mortem.

In Hamirpur, a woman was arrested in connection with the murder of her seven-year-old son Himanshu at Galiahya village on Tuesday.

During quizzing, the accused, Sarvesh Kumari, told the police that she killed her son after he saw her in a compromising position with her brother-in-law last week.

On December 19, the body of Himanshu was found in a cattle shed and a case was registered against his father, Suresh, on the complaint of the maternal uncle of the deceased.

“But during the probe, it emerged that the boy’s father had not visited Galihya village and the boy was staying with his mother at her native place since Thursday,” police said.

The arrested woman was produced before a court which sent her to jail on Tuesday.
