Two UP schemes appreciated by Central govt

With the aim to develop and recognise the exceptional skills of artisans and propel the promotion of diverse state products on a grand scale, the Uttar Pradesh government has introduced two significant schemes that have garnered appreciation and approval for implementation from the Central government.

The first one was the ODOP (One District, One Product) scheme launched in 2018 under the hashtag ‘Nayi Udaan, Nayi Pehechaan’. The Vishwakarma Shram Samman Yojana, the second scheme, was launched to honour the abilities of skilled artisans who produce a variety of goods that fall under the purview of ODOP scheme.

Most of the products from Uttar Pradesh that received GI recognition during Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s tenure were also part of the ODOP scheme. Many of these goods, which the government designated as ODOP and received GI tags, were closely related to handicrafts. They also have the largest share in the micro, small and medium enterprise (MSME) sector.

The statistical data confirm that these schemes have breathed new life into the MSME sector. As a result, Uttar Pradesh has gained recognition as the manufacturing hub of the country. They have contributed to boosting the state’s exports to up to Rs 2 lakh crore.

Out of more than 50 products from Uttar Pradesh that received GI tags after 2014, nearly a dozen are related to the handicraft sector. These include Banarasi brocade sarees, Gulabi Meenakari, woodwork, metal repousse craft, glass beads, wood carving, hand block printing, and more.

According to GI expert Padma Shri Rajinikanth, the GI tag provides legal protection to an agricultural product found in an area. A GI tag can curb the unauthorised use of related products. It enhances the significance of products produced in a particular geographic region. The GI tag is seen as a trademark in the international market. This promotes exports and increases local income. By identifying specific products, it becomes easier to export and promote them in India as well as in the international market.
