The Uttar Pradesh government has taken a serious note of the self-immolation attempt before the gate of the Supreme Court in Delhi by a young woman and her accomplice, who accused Atul Rai, a Bahujan Samaj Party MP from Ghosi, of rape.

A two-member team of senior police officers has been constituted to probe the entire matter. The team comprising DG RK Vishwakarma and ADG Neera Rawat will investigate every aspect of the matter, officials here confirmed on Wednesday.

This team would investigate the allegations leveled by the victim girl against the police officers, employees and other persons and submit its report to the government in two weeks, officials said.

On Monday last, the self-immolation bid was made at the Supreme Court gate. The girl was identified as a resident of Ballia and the youth accompanying her as a resident of Varanasi.

Police said that the girl had accused the Ghosi MP of rape. In this regard, a case was also registered against the relatives of the girl on behalf of the accused, after which the girl and fellow youth tried to commit suicide by setting themselves afire outside the Apex Court in New Delhi.

A woman and a man had earlier tried to enter the Supreme Court through gate number D but were stopped outside by the security personnel due to lack of ID. After this, both of them tried to kill themselves by setting themselves on fire. After the incident, both were taken to Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital.  There the police found a bottle from the spot, due to which it was feared that both of them had brought inflammable material in the bottle.

BSP Ghosi MP Atul Rai has been accused by a young woman of rape at the Lanka police station in Varanasi before the 2019 polls when he was contesting the Lok Sabha polls. After being accused of rape, Atul Rai absconded and during this time the election was held and he won. He was later sent to jail after he surrendered because of rape charges. Atul Rai is lodged in Naini Jail in Prayagraj in this case.

The UP government has already suspended policemen of Lanka police station in Varanasi while the then Superintendent of Police of Varanasi, Amit Pathak, was removed from SSP Ghaziabad's post.
