Two police officials were suspended after the Delhi High Court pulled up the Shamli police for illegally arresting a Delhi-based man and his son from the national capital in September.

Superintendent of Police of Shamli, Sukirti Madhav Mishra, confirmed the suspension on Friday. “Inspector of Shamli Kotwali Pankaj Tyagi and the Investigation Officer of the case SH Sharma have been suspended and an inquiry has been initiated into the illegal arrests,” he said.

The Delhi resident’s son had eloped with a 21-year-old woman from Shamli and married her against the wishes of her family. Subsequently, the girl’s father got a case registered, alleging that his daughter was abducted by the two Delhi-based men on September 8, after which, a team from Shamli Kotwali police station arrested the father-son duo from Delhi.

The couple filed a petition under Section 164 (recording of statement of the accused or witness or the aggrieved before the magistrate) of the Code of Criminal Procedure in Delhi High Court, submitting that they had attained the legal age for marriage and had married each other on their own will. The man also alleged that his father and brother were illegally arrested.

Taking cognisance of the petition, the Delhi High Court pulled up the Shamli police on October 28 for the arrests and said such illegal acts were not permissible and will not be tolerated in the national capital. Justice Mukta Gupta said that she would ‘take action’ against the Shamli police for violating the law at every step in the case.

Meanwhile in Bareilly, two police constables – Satyendra Singh and Naveen Malik -- were suspended for beating up a 14-year-old handicapped boy, who used to sell fish with his father to support his family.

The victim alleged that the two policemen asked him to do some 'illegal' work on Wednesday evening and when he refused, the cops beat him up.

The incident was captured by some locals and was also recorded on CCTV camera and a video clip of the incident went viral on social media. In the video, the two cops can be seen stopping the boy and later, one of them kicking him and the other beating him with a baton.

The boy was subsequently admitted to a community health centre.

Senior Superintendent of Police of Bareilly, Rohit Singh Sajwan, said, “The two constables had an argument with the boy over some issue and later retaliated by thrashing him. The boy's father is yet to file a complaint with the police. We will take appropriate action as the circle officer will investigate and find out what exactly transpired that day. Both constables have been suspended."
