Two AK-47 assault rifles were found to be missing from the armoury of Itwa police station in Siddharthnagar after which an alert was sounded on the Indo-Nepal border on Monday.
Later, senior police officials, including Superintendent of Police of Siddharthnagar, Dr Dharamveer Singh, inspected the police station and suspended five policemen.
He also asked local circle officer Shreyesh Tripathi to probe the incident and submit his findings for further action against the errant persons.
The SP also ordered checking on the international border to recover the weapons but it failed to deliver the expected results.
As per reports, station house officer of Itwa police station, Anil Prakash Pandey, informed his seniors about the mysterious disappearance of two AK-47 assault rifles after which the cops went into a tizzy.
Though the SHO claimed that the weapons went missing from the armoury of the police station, sources said that they were handed over to some cops for use but they left the weapons in a restaurant where they had gone for lunch on Monday.
The SP of Siddharthnagar after initiating an enquiry into the incident, suspended SHO Anil Prakash, head constable Vipin Bhatt and constable Vimal Kishore Mishra along with two other cops.
A case of ‘missing’ instead of theft was registered at the police station.
