Tributes paid to Charan Singh

Former prime minister Chaudhary Charan Singh played a crucial role in organising farmers as an important pressure group in Indian politics.

This was stated by Rashtriya lok Dal legislature Party leader Thakur Dalbeer Singh while speaking at a symposium, ‘Relevance of Chaudhary Charan Singh’s policy and programmes in the new century’, organised here to mark the death anniversary of the party founder and former prime minister on Wednesday.

The RlD leader said that in the present Samajwadi Party rule, the farmers were being neglected a lot as the ruling party leaders had forgotten the promises made by them during the UP Assembly polls.

Speaking at the symposium, RlD state president Munna Singh Chauhan said the farmers were feeling cheated by the SP government as they were promised loan waiver by the ruling party during election campaign but only a handful were being benefited by the scheme.

Hitting out at the state government, Chauhan said the rural areas were getting very little power supply while corruption was rampant at the grains procurement centres opened by the government. He said the RlD workers will continue raising the problems of farmers and fight for their rights.

At the RlD state office, a havan was performed in the morning and party leaders and workers garlanded the statue of Chaudhary Charan Singh in Vidhan Bhawan.

On this occasion, the district units of the party organised kisan chaupals across the state to find out the problems of farmers and fruits were distributed to patients in hospitals.

Rich tributes were also paid to Chaudhary Charan Singh at the Samajwadi Party’s state office here with the ruling party workers taking a resolve to realise the late leader’s dreams under the leadership of Mulayam Singh Yadav.

SP state spokesperson Rajendra Chaudhary said that following the path shown by Chaudhary Charan Singh, the Akhilesh Yadav government had allocated 70 per cent of total budget to agriculture.
